K-12 school systems face persistent, complex challenges that demand innovative, AI-enabled solutions. This project positions high school students—those who experience these challenges most directly—as early innovators and problem-solvers. The SAIL AI Innovation Challenge addresses the urgent need for applied, problem-driven AI education as artificial intelligence reshapes economic, civic, and educational systems. In partnership with District First, the program connects student teams with district-identified operational, instructional, and equity challenges, ensuring that innovation is grounded in real-world needs. Moving beyond introductory coding, the initiative provides a structured pathway for designing, prototyping, and evaluating deployable AI systems. Through a fellowship-based incubator model, students collaborate with teacher leads and university mentors to develop applied AI prototypes supported by seed funding, ethics training, and technical oversight. The project culminates in implementation-ready solutions and public presentations, strengthening student workforce readiness while expanding district capacity for responsible and effective AI adoption.
